The 1971 meeting offered a broad overview of the field of differentiation, assembling a diverse group of researchers exploring a variety of questions in differentiation. It also provided a catalyst for the launch of a new journal Differentiation ( Fig. 2 A) in 1972, which published its first issue in February 1973 with Macmillan Journals Limited. D.V. served as the journal's first editor. The journal from the start emphasized thematically the relationship between developmental biology and disease, especially cancer as its traditional niche, in conjunction with a similar focus at its conferences. The overwhelming success of the first conference established momentum for a follow-up second conference organized by Dr. Nicole Muller-Bérat of Copenhagen, a distinguished hematologist studying acute leukemias, and held in Copenhagen in 1975. This meeting received funding from both the US National Cancer Institute and US National Academy of Sciences, presumably a reflection of the significance of the organization's mission.
