Abstract
The electric-field gradients at Ba135 in YBa2Cu3O6 and La139 in La2CuO4 have been investigated using the first-principles Hartree-Fock cluster procedure. The calculated electric-field gradients at these nuclei lead to nuclear quadrupole coupling constants in very good agreement with experiment. The significance of this good agreement is discussed.
