Thoracic and Abdominal Wall Reconstruction

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

This chapter discusses the nuances associated with thoracic and abdominal wall reconstruction. The first half describes surgical tips for managing the major types of thoracic defects (lateral, sternal, and intrathoracic defects). The second half subdivides ventral abdominal wall reconstruction into its main phases: prehabilitation, fascial evaluation, component separation, mesh choice and placement, and soft tissue reconstruction. The chief tenets of trunk reconstruction include robust structural restoration, followed by coverage and dead space obliteration with well-vascularized tissue. Taking into consideration these guiding principles, surgical tips for the reconstruction of thoracic and abdominal wall defects are presented.
