Abstract
Medicine lags behind other professions in prioritizing leadership development initiatives. Medical professionals are faced with increasingly complex and ethically challenging situations on a daily basis. Utilizing effective leadership techniques such as the democratic and transformative leadership styles result in improved outcomes at all levels of an organization. Learning effective leadership skills is beneficial to medical professionals at any point in their career. These skills can be taught through mentorship, formal academic coursework, focused workshops, and intensive assessments tailored to individual personality types. Important initial steps toward developing current and future leaders among healthcare professionals include dedicating the time and resources required and accepting leadership development as a necessary part of professional development within medicine.
