    Abstract

Ultrasonic examinations of patients with prostatic diseases were performed before, along and after medical and/or surgical management. At first, 1000 examinations were performed with classical sonography through the abdominal wall. For the past 18 months, 200 examinations were performed with the recently available ALOKA apparatus, specifically designed for urology. This new equipment use 3 probes, 1 oscillating for the transabdominal approach and 2 rigid rotating probes: one for transrectal and the other for transurethral high resolutive examination. The authors first evaluated the method for determination of the prostatic adenoma weight and for early diagnosis of prostatic cancer with good results. Nowadays, the main application of this new apparatus is the survey of benign prostatic hypertrophy: to observe the growth of the adenomas, to prepare the surgical scheme for transurethral or transvesical surgery, and to study early postoperative and long-term followup of the prostatic fossa. For these purposes emphasis is put on the clinical dynamic evaluations allowed by this real-time sonography.
